SPACE CODRE SPACE COMMAND Some 28 years old the U.S. Space Force has remained entirely unknown to the people. These assets and technologies represent the collective investment of a society in government as well as military and scientific pursuits. Being an intangible asset, the Free Creative Mind is the singular construct assigning or creating all real value.

This document addresses the need to improve the design process for creating an optimized metamaterial. In particular, two challenges are addressed: creating an electromagnetic concentrator and optimizing the design of metamaterial used to create the electromagnetic concentrator. The first challenge is addressed by developing an electromagnetic field concentrator from a design of concentric geometric shapes. The material forming the concentrator is derived from the application of transformation...

In active networking, applications cannot only determine the protocol functions as necessary at the endpoints of a communication path, but can also inject new protocols into the network for the network nodes to execute on their behalf. The nodes of the network, called active nodes, are programmable entities. Application code executes on these nodes to implement new protocols and services. This project has designed, prototyped, and experimentally validated a prediction mechanism that uses the...

The Time Warp mechanism offers an elegant approach to attacking difficult clock synchronization problems that arise in applications such as parallel discrete event simulation. However, because Time Warp relies on a lookahead and rollback mechanism to achieve widespread exploitation of parallelism, the state of each process must periodically be saved. Existing approaches to implementing state saving and rollback are not appropriate for large Time Warp programs. A component called the Rollback...

Recent research has established that it is possible to exercise extraordinary control of the velocity of propagation of light pulses through a material system. Both extremely slow propagation (much slower than the velocity of light in vacuum) and fast propagation (exceeding the velocity of light in vacuum) have been observed. This article summarizes this recent research, placing special emphasis on the description of the underlying physical processes leading to the modification of the velocity...

It has traditionally been supposed that concepts are learned from definitions or analyses; however, many contemporary philosophers and psychologist think that concepts are taught by means of exemplars, particular items which the community accepts as representative exemplifications of a concept. But this view is incomplete without a theory of how the transition is made from viewing group-licensed exemplars to possessing a concept which is shared with one's linguistic community. Further, although...

Unification of the fundamental forces has been one of the great theoretical problems in physics in the twentieth century. Beginning in 1918 with Weyl and continuing through the last thirty-five years of Einstein's life, many different attempts were made to unify the electromagnetic and the gravitational forces. Moreover, since the four fundamental forces were first defined in the early forties, extensive efforts by numerous investigators have gone into measuring and attempting to unify two or...

The purpose of this research program was to develop a device architecture that is capable of coherently coupling two silicon spin qubits via the electromagnetic field of superconducting resonator. Single Electron spins can be efficiently coupled using the exchange interaction, but the strength of exchange falls of very quickly as a function of the distance separating the two electron spins. Cavity based coupling schemes have recently emerged as a robust tool for coupling superconducting quantum...

Definition clarification of psychotronics . In 1967 , Zdenek Rejdák, the leader of this Conference, introduced the term psychotronics, intended to replace the term parapsychology . The main objectives of psychotronics were to verify and study the phenomena of telepathy, clairvoyance and psychokinesis. The term psychotronics also came to have another meaning – the use of machines that send out waves that carry psychic warfare messages and can also be used to cause various types of physical...

We will apply the quantum inequality type restrictions to Alcubierre's warp drive metric on a scale in which a local region of spacetime can be considered ``flat''. These are inequalities that restrict the magnitude and extent of the negative energy which is needed to form the warp drive metric. From this we are able to place limits on the parameters of the ``Warp Bubble''. It will be shown that the bubble wall thickness is on the order of only a few hundred Planck lengths. Then we will show...

In this paper the problem of the quantum stability of the two-dimensional warp drive spacetime moving with an apparent faster than light velocity is considered. We regard as a maximum extension beyond the event horizon of that spacetime its embedding in a three-dimensional Minkowskian space with the topology of the corresponding Misner space. It is obtained that the interior of the spaceship bubble becomes then a multiply connected nonchronal region with closed timelike curves and that the most...

The warp drive envisioned by Alcubierre that can move a spaceship faster than light can, with modification, levitate it as if it were lighter than light, even allow it to go below a black hole's horizon and return unscathed. Wormhole-like versions of the author's `drainhole' (1973) might provide the drive, in the form of a by-pass of the spaceship composed of a multitude of tiny topological tunnels. The by-pass would divert the gravitational `ether' into a sink covering part of the spaceship's...

Over the last decade, there has been a respectable level of scientific interest regarding the concept of a warp drive. This is a hypothetical propulsion device that could theoretically circumvent the traditional limitations of special relativity which restricts spacecraft to sub-light velocities. Any breakthrough in this field would revolutionize space exploration and open the doorway to interstellar travel. This article discusses a novel approach to generating the warp bubble necessary for...

The one-loop effects of vacuum polarization induced by untwisted fermions in QED in a nonsimply connected space-time with topology $S^{1}\times R^{3}$ are investigated. It is found that photon propagation in this system is anisotropic, appearing several massive photon modes and a superluminal transverse mode. For small compactification radius $a$, the superluminal velocity increases logarithmically with $a$. At low energies the photon masses lead to an effective confinement of the gauge fields...

Consistent timing between the injection of gas in plasma radiation sources (PRSs) and the generator current pulse is crucial to producing high-yield x-ray pulses. This Phase 1 SBIR effort has shown that triggering modes currently used in DTRA's x-ray simulator program (high voltage trigger pin; command fire mode) introduce an effective variation in initial load mass of +/-11%, and this may be as high as +/-20%. This variation is so large that it can completely mask any PRS improvement attempted...

The modified Chaplygin gas (MCG) is a strong candidate for the unified model of dark matter and dark energy. The equation of state of this modified model is valid from the radiation era to the $\Lambda$CDM model. In early epoch (when $\rho$ was large), dark matter had the dominant role while at later stages (when $\rho$ is small), the MCG model behaves as dark energy. In this work, we have found exact solution of static spherically symmetric Einstein equations describing a wormhole for an...

A fundamental property in wormhole physics is the flaring-out condition of the throat, which through the Einstein field equation entails the violation of the null energy condition. In the context of modified theories of gravity, it has also been shown that the normal matter can be imposed to satisfy the energy conditions, and it is the higher order curvature terms, interpreted as a gravitational fluid, that sustain these non-standard wormhole geometries, fundamentally different from their...

Its predictions range from the existence of black holes, gravitational radiation to the cosmological models, predicting a primordial beginning, namely the big-bang. We simplify the warp drive space-time so that it becomes stationary and the distorsion becomes one-dimensional and static. We use this simplified warp drive space-time as a background for a photon field. We shall especially use the Drummond\&Hathrell action in order to investigate the velocity effects on photons in this background. Finally, we discuss the limitations of this model.

''Warp drive'' spacetimes are useful as ''gedanken-experiments'' and as a theoretician's probe of the foundations of general relativity. Applying linearized gravity to the weak-field warp drive, i.e., for non-relativistic warp-bubble velocities, we find that the occurrence of energy condition violations in this class of spacetimes is generic to the form of the geometry under consideration and is not simply a side-effect of the ''superluminal'' properties. Using the linearized construction it is...

Given that the simple wave equation of Brans-Dicke theory for the scalar field is preserved, we have investigated, through exhaustively analyzing the Bianchi identities, the consistent theories which violate the exact energy conservation equation. It is found that only three theories exist which are unambiguously determined from consistency, without imposing arbitrary functions by hand. Each of these theories possesses a specific interaction term which controls the energy exchange between the...

Following the recent theory of Lovelock-Brans-Dicke gravity, we continue to investigate the conditions to support traversable wormholes by the gravitational effects of spacetime parity and topology, which arise from the nonminimal couplings of a background scalar field to the Chern-Pontryagin density and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant. The flaring-out condition indicates that a Morris-Thorne-type wormhole can be maintained by violating the generalized null energy condition, and thus also breaking...

In this paper, we explore higher-dimensional asymptotically flat wormhole geometries in the framework of Gauss-Bonnet (GB) gravity and investigate the effects of the GB term, by considering a specific radial-dependent redshift function and by imposing a particular equation of state. The `theoretical' existence of traversable Lorentzian wormholes in the classical, macroscopic world is plagued by the violation of the well--known energy conditions of General Relativity. In this brief article we show : (i) how the extent of violation can be quantified using certain volume integrals (ii) whether this `amount of violation' can be minimised for some specific cut--and--paste geometric constructions. Examples and possibilities are also outlined.

In our November 1988 transition report, we noted that NASA needed to (1) launch planetary missions on time, (2) institutionalize a life-cycle cost management approach for the Space Station, and (3) develop a strategic plan and report full project costs to the Congress. Since that time, most of these issues have been at least partly resolved.

In January 1990, in the aftermath of scandals at the Departments of Defense and Housing and Urban Development, the General Accounting Office began a special effort to review and report on federal government program areas that we considered high risk. After consulting with congressional leaders, GAO sought, first, to identify areas that are especially vulnerable to waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement. We then began work to see whether we could find the fundamental causes of problems in these...

NASA devotes approximately 40% of its budget to R and D. Twelve NASA Research Centers and their contractors conduct this R and D, which ranges across many disciplines and is fueled by information about previous endeavors. Locating the right information is crucial. While NASA researchers use peer contacts as their primary source of STI, on-line bibliographic data bases -- both Government-owned and commercial -- are also frequently consulted. Once identified, the STI must be delivered in a usable...

As man pushes back the frontiers of high speed flight, changes in structural design requirements necessitate the development of new materials. During the last few years, material and structural engineers have solved many formidable problems in ways that have led to significant changes in the design process itself. They have been able to develop new materials and designs without sacrificing structural weight to gross operating weight ratios. In fact, these ratios are generally comparable to, or...
